Hyah! Is a band based in College Station, TX with a unique New Orleans inspired funk sound, affectionately deemed “punk for sissies” by band member David Alvarez. What started as just a party band by some calculus bros has branched out to become a popular band in the area that plays many venues including First Friday in Bryan, TX. The band has been together for about 3 years, and in that time has collaborated to create many original songs, their first being a song called “Tiger Shuffle”.
What song would you want to hear before you die?
David would want to hear the song “Sing for me I’m dying of thirst” by Kendrick Lamar while he dies. Not before. While. Poncho would want to hear “My Life” by The Beatles so that he could feel all the feels, and cry all the tears. Will would pick “Float on” by Modest Mouse to hear before he died.
Do you plan on pursuing music after college?
Hyah! unanimously agreed that they will probably not pursue music after college but rather keep doing it as a hobby, unless an opportunity to do so arises. David is a statistics major, Poncho is an applied math/computer science major and Will is a mechanical engineering major. All three of the band members go to A&M.
What was the first instrument you learned to play?
David and Will’s first instrument was the Piano. Poncho’s was the guitar.
Do you have any interesting stories about yourselves?
David visited Big Bend and had mishap in his pants and was completely casual about the situation. Poncho was once a salesman who told people he was a personal squirrel watcher instead. One time at band camp, Will played the tenor drum and claimed he was was 5’3” and really chubby, which caused him to collapse from the weight of the drum. All the while, he was dressed as a guy from the blue man group. When he cried the tears left tracks down the blue paint on his face.
