Penny and Sparrow and their opening act, Joy Oladokun, came to College Station and put on a wonderful concert in Rudder Theater last Sunday. Concert-goers, young and old, made their way to campus in the cold and rainy weather to see Penny and Sparrow on their Wendigo tour. For those who couldn’t make it, here’s a quick recap about the performers.
Joy Oladokun is a versatile and eclectic artist with each of her songs sounding different from the next. Her songs are unique and aren’t defined by one specific genre. Her sound goes from edgy rock to more groovy and smooth R&B to soft indie folk. She currently has one album out called Carry, which was released in 2016, so make sure to go check that out and support an up and coming artist.
Penny and Sparrow are an indie folk band composed of two members, Kyle Jahnke, and Andy Baxter. The band has origins in Texas, created after the two met at the University of Texas in 2011, and they’ve been making music ever since. Their sound is mostly characterized by acoustic guitar and harmonized vocals. Their songs are calming and introspective, conveying a sense of solitude with lyrics that are intricate and heartfelt, solidifying their place in the music industry as indie folk artists with a unique style and sound.
Penny and Sparrow are currently on their Wendigo tour, where they will continue to travel to various cities across the United States from now until early December. We thank Penny and Sparrow and Joy for making Texas A&M a stop on their tour and hope everyone who came out enjoyed the show!
